This paper is a discussion of cross-cultural awareness and communication from an Asian perspective. It is presented in relation to the presenter’s personal experiences as an overseas student and as a teacher working with students from language backgrounds other than English. The main focus is on the importance of fostering understanding in building relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds. Useful strategies for encouraging Asian students in New Zealand classrooms to gain maximum benefit from their studies are also included. Show less
